Tea Ceremony Utensils / Kaiseki Utensils: Choshi (Kan-nabe) Edo Period, Silver Inlay / Lacquered Lid with 16-Leaf Chrysanthemum Mon Maki-e Scattered Design. Excellent piece.
Thank you for viewing.
This is an Edo period sake ewer (kan-nabe). Suitable for tea ceremony or kaiseki dining.
The deep, aged iron patina is truly evocative.
The handle features intricate arabesque silver inlay and a gourd-shaped openwork design.
The lid is lacquered with fine craftsmanship, decorated with scattered sixteen-petal chrysanthemum crests. In my opinion, this suggests a distinguished provenance.
It possesses an elegant atmosphere, and the craftsmanship is superb.
Regarding the depicted motifs:
On one side of the ewer, Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese legend (a sage/sorcerer), is depicted riding a white donkey. It is said he could travel tens of thousands of miles a day and fold his donkey when not riding it.
He is the immortal who inspired the auspicious Japanese proverb A horse from a gourd (hyotan kara koma).
On the opposite side, Dong Feng, a sage from China's Three Kingdoms period (a divine physician), is depicted.
He is said to have saved the sick and that a tiger, always accompanying him, would attack those who caused trouble, thus helping people in need.
Both are popular subjects in calligraphy, painting, and sculpture. The expressions of the depicted immortals are quite humorous.
